Toolsseismometers are instruments used to measure and record ground motion produced by seismic waves. They are essential tools in seismology, earthquake engineering, and geophysical exploration. A seismometer typically consists of a mass suspended on a spring inside a housing. When the ground moves, the housing moves with it while the mass tends to stay at rest. The relative motion is converted into an electrical signal, which is recorded as a seismogram.

Seismometers come in several types, chosen for different tasks. Broadband seismometers record a wide range of frequencies and are favored in research. Short-period seismometers are more sensitive to high-frequency waves and suited to local events. Strong-motion seismometers are built to withstand large ground motions and provide accurate readings during strong earthquakes. Modern instruments are often digital, include timing via GPS, and can operate in arrays.

Uses include detecting and locating earthquakes, estimating magnitude, mapping the structure of Earth's interior, monitoring volcanic activity, and supporting civil engineering through site characterization and hazard assessment. They are deployed in permanent networks such as national or international seismic arrays and in temporary field campaigns. Data are transmitted to data centers, processed into seismograms, and used for earthquake catalogs, tomographic imaging, and waveform analysis.
