A toolchanger is a mechanism used in automated manufacturing and machining to rapidly and reliably change cutting tools or other end effectors on a machine tool. This automation significantly reduces non-productive time associated with manual tool changes, allowing a machine to perform a wider range of operations without interruption. Toolchangers are common components of CNC milling machines, lathes, and robotic work cells.

There are several types of toolchangers, with the most prevalent being the automatic tool changer (ATC). ATCs typically employ a carousel or a chain-type magazine to store a variety of tools. When a new tool is needed, a robotic arm or a specialized mechanism moves from the magazine to the spindle, detaches the current tool, and inserts the required new tool. The process is controlled by the machine's numerical control (NC) system, which selects the appropriate tool based on the programmed machining sequence.

The benefits of using toolchangers are substantial. They increase productivity by minimizing downtime, enable the machining of complex parts requiring multiple tool geometries, and improve process consistency.
