Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat. Tonsillitis is usually caused by a viral infection, though bacterial infections can also be a cause. Symptoms commonly include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils that may be red and have white patches or streaks of pus. Other possible symptoms are a headache, earache, and a rash.

Diagnosis of tonsillitis is typically made based on a physical examination and the patient's symptoms. A throat swab may be taken to identify the specific cause, especially if a bacterial infection is suspected. Treatment for viral tonsillitis usually involves supportive care, such as rest, fluids, and pain relievers. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial tonsillitis. In cases of recurrent or severe tonsillitis that interfere with breathing or eating, a tonsillectomy (surgical removal of the tonsils) may be recommended. Most cases of tonsillitis resolve within a week to ten days.
