Geometric tolerances specify allowable deviations in form, orientation, location, runout, and profile, independent of the final size of the part. Applications often combine both types to control how parts fit together and move.

Specification on engineering drawings uses tolerance notation, including unilateral or bilateral limits, and general tolerances for features not individually specified. Tight tolerances increase manufacturing cost and inspection effort, so engineers balance functional requirements with producibility and measurement capabilities.

Standards and practices for tolerances include ISO 1101 and ASME Y14.5 for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and ISO 2768 for general tolerances when no specific tolerancing is provided. Tolerance analysis techniques, such as worst-case or root-sum-square methods, are used to assess stack-ups in assemblies and to guide design decisions and quality planning.

In practice, tolerances are critical across engineering fields, from machined components and injection molded parts to aerospace and electronics, where consistent fits, performance, and reliability depend on their careful specification and verification.
