toeproximal

Toeproximal is a descriptive term used in some medical notes and radiology reports to indicate the proximal portion of a toe. It is not a formal anatomical term found in all standard glossaries, but it can help clinicians orient descriptions of injuries, findings, or surgical plans. In this usage, toeproximal refers to the region closest to the foot's main body, near the metatarsophalangeal joint.

Anatomy and scope

In toes that have three phalanges, the proximal segment corresponds to the proximal phalanx, which articulates with the metatarsal head at the metatarsophalangeal joint. The great toe typically has two phalanges (proximal and distal), so the toeproximal region specifically encompasses the proximal phalanx there as well. Soft tissues surrounding the base of the toe—including ligaments, the tendons of toe flexors and extensors, and vessels and nerves—also contribute to this region.

Clinical relevance

The toeproximal descriptor is commonly used to localize injuries or pathology to the base part of a toe, such as proximal phalanx fractures, sprains, or joint injuries at the metatarsophalangeal region. In imaging, labeling the injury as toeproximal helps distinguish it from distal or mid-shaft lesions. It can assist in communication among clinicians when precise, location-based terminology is needed without specifying a particular bone.
