Titarpeissa is a genus of extinct cartilaginous fish belonging to the order Hybodontiformes. These prehistoric sharks lived during the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods, approximately 161 to 100 million years ago. Fossils of Titarpeissa have been found in various locations worldwide, indicating a widespread distribution across ancient marine environments.

The defining characteristic of Titarpeissa, like other hybodonts, is their distinctive tooth morphology. They possessed numerous small, conical teeth at the front of their jaws, likely used for grasping prey, and larger, flatter teeth towards the back, adapted for crushing. This dental arrangement suggests a diet that included a variety of food sources, possibly including crustaceans and shelled invertebrates, in addition to smaller fish.

While a complete skeleton of Titarpeissa has not been discovered, paleontological evidence, primarily from isolated teeth and fin spines, allows for reconstructions of their general appearance. They are thought to have resembled modern sharks in their general body plan, with a streamlined form and paired fins. The fin spines, often found in association with teeth, suggest they possessed these defensive structures, a common trait among hybodonts.

The extinction of Titarpeissa, along with the rest of the Hybodontiformes, occurred by the end of the Cretaceous period. Their decline and eventual disappearance are often attributed to increased competition from the more evolutionarily successful actinopterygian fishes, which diversified and rose to dominance during the Mesozoic Era. The study of Titarpeissa provides valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of sharks during a critical period in marine vertebrate history.
