Tislausmenetmissä, or distillation methods, refers to a range of techniques used to separate components of a liquid mixture based on their differing boiling points. This process is fundamental in many scientific and industrial applications, including the purification of water, the production of alcoholic beverages, and the refining of crude oil.

The basic principle of distillation involves heating a liquid mixture to a point where one or more of its components vaporize. This vapor is then cooled in a separate apparatus, causing it to condense back into a liquid. The condensed liquid, now enriched in the more volatile component, is collected. The less volatile components remain in the original container.

There are several variations of distillation. Simple distillation is suitable for separating liquids with significantly different boiling points or for separating a liquid from a non-volatile solute. Fractional distillation is employed when separating liquids with close boiling points. It utilizes a fractionating column, which provides a larger surface area for repeated vaporization and condensation cycles, leading to a more efficient separation. Steam distillation is used for temperature-sensitive compounds that might decompose at their boiling point; steam is introduced to lower the boiling point of the mixture. Vacuum distillation is employed for compounds with very high boiling points or those that are susceptible to thermal degradation. By reducing the pressure, the boiling points of the components are lowered, allowing for distillation at lower temperatures.

The effectiveness of any distillation method depends on factors such as the difference in boiling points between the components, the efficiency of the apparatus, and the temperature control.
