It emphasizes identifying recurrent patterns and organizing them into typologies or type-based frameworks that facilitate comparison and analysis. In English, typology is the standard term; tipology is used less widely, sometimes as a translation variant or within specific disciplines.

In archaeology, artifact typology classifies objects by form, decoration, and production technique, forming a sequence of artifact types used for relative dating and cultural interpretation. Typologies here provide a means to organize material remains across sites and time periods, highlighting stylistic or functional groupings.

In linguistics, linguistic typology studies cross-language patterns to identify universals and variation in grammar, phonology, and syntax. It compares structural features across languages, producing typologies such as word-order types (for example SVO vs SOV) or morphological classifications like isolating, agglutinative, and fusional systems.

Beyond archaeology and linguistics, typology appears in anthropology, religious studies, architecture, and art, where scholars categorize belief systems, social structures, architectural styles, and artistic types. The goal is to reveal regularities and organize diversity in a manageable framework that supports comparative analysis.

Method and limitations: Typological work relies on explicit criteria for type definition, careful sampling, and transparent boundaries between types. Typologies can be subjective and reflect researchers’ historical and cultural contexts; they may oversimplify continuous variation or overlook atypical instances.
