Timetosubstitution is a mathematical technique used to simplify calculus problems by introducing a new auxiliary variable, commonly denoted t, which often represents time but can be any convenient parameter. The idea is to transform a function or equation in the original variable into a form that is easier to integrate or solve, by working with the new variable t.

The method follows the standard substitution framework. One selects a substitution t = g(x) so that dt = g′(x) dx. The original integral or differential equation is then rewritten entirely in terms of t. After performing the required operations with respect to t, the result is translated back into the original variable by inverting the substitution or by substituting back to express the answer in x (or the problem’s original variable). This approach is especially helpful when the integrand contains a composite function whose inner structure matches the derivative of the chosen t.

A classic example is the integral ∫ 2x cos(x^2) dx. Choosing t = x^2 gives dt = 2x dx, transforming the integral into ∫ cos t dt, which evaluates to sin t + C, and back-substitutes to sin(x^2) + C. Timetosubstitution is closely related to u-substitution and other change-of-variables techniques, and it is widely taught as a versatile tool for handling integrals and differential equations where a suitable inner function can be identified.
