Timbreja is a term used in music to describe the quality of a musical note, sound, or tone that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices and musical instruments. It is often referred to as "tone color" or "sound quality." Timbre is determined by several factors, including the harmonic content of a sound (the mix of overtones), the attack and decay of the sound, and the vibrato of the sound.

Unlike pitch (how high or low a sound is) or loudness (how loud or soft a sound is), timbre is a more subjective characteristic. It's what allows us to differentiate between a piano and a violin playing the same note at the same volume. Different instruments, even when playing the same note, will have unique timbres due to the materials they are made from, their construction, and how the sound is produced (e.g., blowing air, plucking strings, striking a surface).

Similarly, human voices have distinct timbres based on the vocal cords, resonance, and articulation of the speaker or singer. For example, a soprano voice has a different timbre than a bass voice. Composers and musicians utilize timbre to create emotional effects, add variety to their music, and evoke specific moods or imagery.
