Tilavuusmoduulit, known in English as bulk modulus, is a measure of a substance's resistance to uniform compression. It quantifies how much a substance's volume changes when subjected to hydrostatic pressure. In simpler terms, it tells you how easily a material can be squeezed.

Mathematically, the bulk modulus (K) is defined as the ratio of the applied pressure change to the resulting relative volume change. The formula is K = -V (dP/dV), where V is the volume and dP/dV represents the change in pressure with respect to the change in volume. The negative sign indicates that an increase in pressure leads to a decrease in volume.

A high bulk modulus signifies that a substance is very resistant to compression, meaning it requires a large pressure to produce a small change in volume. Conversely, a low bulk modulus indicates that the substance is easily compressible. For instance, liquids and gases generally have much lower bulk moduli than solids. Water, for example, is much more compressible than steel.

Bulk modulus is an important property in various fields of physics and engineering. It is used in the study of acoustics to determine the speed of sound in a medium, as the speed of sound is related to both the bulk modulus and the density of the material. It also plays a role in understanding the behavior of materials under extreme pressures, such as those found deep within the Earth's interior or in astrophysical contexts.
