The speed at which the rotor turns is directly proportional to the velocity of the fluid.

The rotational speed of the paddlewheel is typically detected by a sensor, such as a magnetic pickup or an optical sensor. The frequency of these pulses is then translated into a flow rate measurement by a processing unit, which can be integrated into the meter itself or be a separate device.
