The tibiofibular joint refers to the articulation between the tibia and the fibula, the two long bones of the lower leg. This joint is not a single entity but rather a complex of articulations that allow for some degree of movement and stability. There are three main components to the tibiofibular syndesmosis: the proximal tibiofibular joint, the interosseous membrane, and the distal tibiofibular joint.

The proximal tibiofibular joint is located at the upper end of the tibia and fibula. It is a synovial joint, meaning it is enclosed by a capsule and contains synovial fluid, allowing for slight gliding movements. The interosseous membrane is a broad, fibrous sheet of connective tissue that runs between the shafts of the tibia and fibula. It plays a crucial role in connecting the two bones, providing a large surface area for muscle attachments and distributing forces between them.

The distal tibiofibular joint is located at the lower ends of the tibia and fibula, forming part of the ankle mortise. This joint is a syndesmosis, characterized by fibrous tissue that binds the bones together, allowing for very limited movement but providing significant stability to the ankle. Injuries to the tibiofibular syndesmosis, particularly at the distal end, are often referred to as high ankle sprains and can be more severe and have a longer recovery period than typical ankle sprains. The interconnectedness of these structures is vital for the proper weight-bearing and functional mobility of the lower leg and ankle.
