Thrusttype refers to the method by which a propulsion system generates the force needed to accelerate an object, typically a vehicle, in the opposite direction. This fundamental principle of physics, action and reaction, is described by Newton's Third Law of Motion. Different types of thrust are employed depending on the medium in which the object operates and the desired performance characteristics.

In atmospheric flight, air-breathing engines like jet engines and propellers are common. Jet engines expel a high-speed jet of hot gas, creating thrust. Propellers, essentially rotating wings, generate thrust by pushing air backward. For spacecraft, which operate in a vacuum, reaction engines are necessary. These expel mass, such as exhaust gases or ions, to produce thrust. Chemical rockets are a prime example, burning fuel and oxidizer to create hot exhaust. Electric propulsion systems, like ion thrusters, accelerate charged particles to generate thrust, often with very high efficiency but low thrust. Watercraft also utilize thrust principles, commonly through propellers, water jets, or sails that harness the force of wind. The choice of thrusttype is dictated by factors such as required speed, efficiency, operating environment, and available energy sources.
