TheLetter is an online community and digital archive dedicated to the practice and preservation of handwritten and typed correspondence. It was founded in 2015 by a group of typographers and history enthusiasts as a response to the declining use of personal letters in the age of instant messaging. The platform hosts an extensive database of letter samples from over 50 countries and 200 years of history, allowing users to view, search, and download high‑resolution scans. In addition to archival functions, TheLetter offers a set of tools for creating new letters, including digital “stationery” templates that mimic old‑fashioned paper cuts, stamps, and seals. Members can submit their own letters for inclusion in the archive, fostering a collaborative environment where contemporary writers from diverse backgrounds contribute to a living collection.
TheLetter’s design is intentionally minimalistic, with a focus on the typography and layout of each document.
By blending a traditional cultural practice with modern digital tools, TheLetter preserves the art of letter
