Theköysipyörä, a Finnish term, translates to "rope wheel" or "pulley." In its most basic form, it is a grooved wheel designed to redirect the path of a rope or cable, or to reduce the effort required to lift or move a load. The groove in the wheel is shaped to fit the rope, preventing it from slipping.

The principle behind a single fixed pulley is simple mechanical advantage in terms of direction. By attaching a load to one end of a rope and passing the rope over a pulley, a person can pull down to lift the load up, which can be more convenient. However, a single fixed pulley does not provide any mechanical advantage in terms of force; the force required to lift the load is equal to the weight of the load plus any friction in the pulley.

When multiple pulleys are used in combination, as in a block and tackle system, significant mechanical advantage can be achieved. This allows a user to lift very heavy objects with a relatively small amount of force. The rope is threaded through a series of moving and fixed pulleys, and each moving pulley effectively halves the force required to lift the load, while doubling the distance the rope must be pulled.
