The julbord, literally “the Christmas table,” is a central Swedish Christmas buffet tradition served during the holiday season. It is most commonly enjoyed on Christmas Eve, though variations occur in Advent and on Christmas Day.

Origin and concept: The practice developed in Swedish households in the 18th and 19th centuries as a festive, multi-dish buffet that could accommodate a wide range of tastes. It evolved from regional celebratory meals into a standardized format that emphasizes sharing and variety.

Cold selections commonly include various pickled and cured fish such as sill (pickled herring) in several marinades, gravlax, and beet salads. Warm dishes often feature Janssons frestelse (potato gratin with onions and anchovies), meatballs (köttbullar), and prinskorv (small sausages), along with julskinka (Christmas ham). Bread, butter, and cheeses accompany the spread. Additional elements may include boiled potatoes, red cabbage, and other seasonal sides.

Desserts and beverages: For dessert, risgrynsgröt (rice porridge) with cinnamon is traditional, sometimes followed by ris à la Malta. Sweets, cookies, and saffron buns may accompany coffee.
