Textilfinishen, or textile finishing, refers to a range of processes applied to fabrics after weaving or knitting to modify their appearance, texture, or performance. Finishing can be mechanical, chemical, or a combination of both, and may be designed to be temporary or durable across many washes. The goal is to enhance properties without compromising fabric integrity.

The finishing sequence typically follows pretreatment such as desizing, scouring, and bleaching to remove contaminants and prepare the fibre surface. After pretreatment, fabrics undergo finishing operations that alter hand feel, drape, or surface characteristics. Mechanical finishes include calendering for gloss and smoothness, napping or brushing for softness and texture, embossing and glazing for pattern and sheen, and processes like sanforizing to control shrinkage.

Chemical finishes apply resins or polymers to the fabric surface, often through padding, coating, or heat setting. Common chemical finishes are crease resistance or durable press, softening, stiffness, water or oil repellents, soil or stain release, anti-static, flame retardancy, antimicrobial treatments, and UV protection. Some finishes are designed to be durable and withstand multiple laundering cycles, while others are temporary and fade after washing.

Finishing also encompasses aesthetic aspects such as color fastness, luster, and texture. Environmental and regulatory considerations are increasingly important, as finishing can involve significant water, energy, and chemical use. Sustainable approaches include low-emission resins, enzyme-based technologies, and closed-loop wastewater systems. Performance is typically evaluated by tests for crease recovery, pilling or abrasion, water repellency, and related standards to ensure fabric meets specified requirements.
