Tetrahydrofuran (THF), also known as oxolane, is an organic compound with the formula (CH2)4O. It is a colorless, water-miscible liquid with a low viscosity and a faint ether-like odor. THF is a five-membered heterocyclic ether. It is a polar aprotic solvent.

THF is widely used as a solvent in a variety of applications. It is particularly useful for dissolving nonpolar compounds and is often used in organic synthesis. THF is also employed as a solvent for polymers, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In addition, it finds use in the production of adhesives, coatings, and pharmaceuticals.

Industrially, THF is produced from 1,4-butanediol, furan, or butadiene. The dewatering of 1,4-butanediol is a common method. Another route involves the hydrogenation of furan. THF can also be generated from butadiene through acetoxylation followed by hydrogenation and hydrolysis.

THF is flammable and should be handled with care. It can form explosive peroxides upon exposure to air, especially when stored for extended periods or when exposed to light. For this reason, it is often stored with stabilizers like butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). When it degrades, it can form acidic byproducts. Its high solvency power can also cause it to attack certain types of plastics and rubbers, which is important to consider when selecting storage containers or equipment for its use.
