Testiklen, also known as testicles or testes, are the primary reproductive organs in males of many animal species, including humans. They are typically oval-shaped and housed within a sac of skin called the scrotum, which hangs outside the body. This external positioning is crucial for maintaining the optimal temperature for sperm production, a process called spermatogenesis.

Within each testicle are coiled tubes called seminiferous tubules. It is here that sperm cells are manufactured continuously from puberty onwards. The testicles also contain interstitial cells, also known as Leydig cells, which are responsible for producing androgens, the most important of which is testosterone. Testosterone plays a vital role in the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, such as deeper voice, facial hair, and increased muscle mass, as well as regulating libido and sperm production.

During fetal development, the testicles form inside the abdomen and normally descend into the scrotum before birth. If they fail to descend, this condition is called cryptorchidism and can affect fertility if not treated. The testicles are also susceptible to various conditions, including infections, injuries, and tumors. Regular self-examination is often recommended to detect any abnormalities early.
