Testauslajis is a term used in Finnish-language discourse to describe a species selected primarily for testing methods, procedures, or hypotheses in research, development, and safety assessment. It denotes organisms chosen for preliminary experimentation before broader application to more complex or ethically sensitive systems.

Although the exact term testauslajis is not widely attested in formal taxonomic usage, its construction follows common Finnish compounds: testaus- (testing) and laji (species). In practice, Finnish scientists more often use testlaji or mallilaji for similar concepts, but testauslajis may appear in internal documents and methodological guides to emphasize the testing role of the organism.

Applications include technique development (e.g., validating a new assay), method optimization, and initial toxicological or ecological risk assessments. The choice of a test species favors organisms with well-characterized biology, short generation times, and established handling protocols, such as bacterial strains (for example Escherichia coli K-12), yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), or small model organisms (Arabidopsis thaliana, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans).

Limitations and considerations include ethical, biosafety, and regulatory requirements, since a test species may not fully represent responses in other organisms or ecosystems. Results obtained with a testauslaji should be validated in subsequent studies using appropriate model organisms or fields.
