Terugmutaties, also known as reverse mutations or back mutations, are genetic changes that occur when a mutated gene reverts to its original or wild-type sequence. This can happen through a secondary mutation at the same nucleotide that originally changed, or at a different nucleotide that results in a functional restoration of the gene product. In essence, a back mutation effectively undoes the effect of the original forward mutation.

The process of a terugmutatie involves changes in the DNA sequence. A forward mutation alters the DNA, leading to a change in the protein's function or structure. A subsequent mutation at the same site, or a different site that compensates for the original change, can restore the original phenotype.
