Terugmutaties, also known as reverse mutations or back mutations, are genetic changes that occur when a mutated gene reverts to its original or wild-type sequence. This can happen through a secondary mutation at the same nucleotide that originally changed, or at a different nucleotide that results in a functional restoration of the gene product. In essence, a back mutation effectively undoes the effect of the original forward mutation.
