Terpentiini, also known as turpentine, is a volatile oil obtained by the distillation of resin from living trees, mainly pines. It is a mixture of terpenes, primarily monoterpenes like alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, along with camphene, limonene, and other related compounds. Historically, terpentiini has been used as a solvent, particularly for thinning oil-based paints and varnishes, and in the production of wax polishes. Its strong odor and flammable nature are characteristic properties.

In addition to its use in art and industry, terpentiini has also found applications in traditional medicine, though these uses are not supported by modern scientific evidence. It was sometimes employed as a rub for muscular aches or respiratory ailments, believed to have counter-irritant or expectorant properties. However, ingestion or prolonged skin contact can be harmful, leading to irritation, respiratory distress, or more severe toxic effects.

The production of terpentiini is part of the broader process of naval stores, which historically included tar, pitch, and rosin. The resin is collected from pine trees, a process that can be done sustainably without killing the tree. The distilled oil, terpentiini, is then separated from the rosin, which is the solid residue. While synthetic alternatives have replaced terpentiini in some applications, it remains a significant product in certain industries due to its effectiveness and characteristic properties.
