A thermostat is a device that automatically regulates temperature. It typically works by sensing the ambient temperature and then activating or deactivating a heating or cooling system to maintain a desired setpoint. Thermostats are commonly found in homes, buildings, and vehicles.

The basic principle of operation for many thermostats involves a bimetallic strip. This strip is made of two different metals that expand at different rates when heated. When the temperature reaches the setpoint, the strip straightens, opening the circuit and shutting off the furnace.

Programmable thermostats allow users to set different temperature schedules for different times of the day or week, leading to potential energy savings. Smart thermostats connect to Wi-Fi and can be controlled remotely via a smartphone app. They can also learn user habits and adjust settings automatically, further optimizing energy efficiency and comfort.
