A thermostat is a device that automatically regulates temperature. It typically works by sensing the ambient temperature and then activating or deactivating a heating or cooling system to maintain a desired setpoint. Thermostats are commonly found in homes, buildings, and vehicles to control climate.

The basic principle of operation involves a sensing element that reacts to temperature changes. In older mechanical thermostats, this might be a bimetallic strip. As the temperature changes, the strip bends, making or breaking an electrical contact that controls the heating or cooling equipment. More modern thermostats use electronic sensors, such as thermistors or thermocouples, which convert temperature into an electrical signal. This signal is then processed by a microchip or other circuitry to determine when to engage or disengage the system.

Thermostats allow for energy efficiency by preventing systems from running unnecessarily. Programmable thermostats offer even greater control, enabling users to set different temperatures for different times of the day or week, further optimizing energy consumption. Smart thermostats go a step further, allowing for remote control via smartphones and learning user preferences to automatically adjust settings. The primary function of any thermostat, however, remains the consistent maintenance of a set temperature.
