Mercury-containing thermometers are being phased out in many contexts due to safety concerns, with alcohol-based and electronic alternatives now widespread.

Galileo's thermoscopes, followed by Fahrenheit, Celsius, and other scale refinements, laid the groundwork for precise temperature measurement.
