Termites are social insects that live in colonies, similar to ants. They belong to the order Blattodea, though they were formerly classified as Isoptera. Termites are found on every continent except Antarctica. They are detritivores, meaning they feed on dead organic matter, primarily wood. This diet makes them significant decomposers in many ecosystems but also a major pest for wooden structures.

A termite colony typically consists of three castes: reproductives (king and queen), workers, and soldiers. The reproductives are responsible for laying eggs and establishing new colonies. Workers are the most numerous caste and are responsible for foraging for food, building and repairing the nest, and caring for the young. Soldiers have specialized heads and jaws and defend the colony from predators.

Termites communicate through chemical signals called pheromones, which they use to navigate, locate food, and recognize nestmates. They construct elaborate nests, often made of soil, wood, and their own saliva, which can be underground, in mounds, or within trees and wooden structures.

There are thousands of known termite species, with diverse ecological roles. While some species are beneficial in breaking down dead wood in forests, others can cause substantial damage to buildings, furniture, and agricultural crops. Identification and management of pest termites are important for protecting property and infrastructure. Their social structure and impact on their environment make them a fascinating subject of study.
