Terminaalikarvoitus refers to the growth of terminal hair, which is the thicker, coarser, and usually darker hair that develops on the human body during and after puberty. This type of hair contrasts with vellus hair, which is fine, light-colored, and short. Terminal hair is primarily found on the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and, in males, on the face, chest, abdomen, limbs, and pubic area. The distribution and density of terminal hair are significantly influenced by hormones, particularly androgens.

The development of terminal hair is a key secondary sexual characteristic. In males, rising levels of androgens like testosterone stimulate the growth of facial hair, chest hair, and pubic hair. In females, while androgen levels are lower, they still play a role in the development of pubic and axillary (underarm) hair. Conditions affecting hormone levels can alter the pattern of terminal hair growth. For instance, conditions like hirsutism in women involve excessive growth of terminal hair in a male-like pattern, often due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or adrenal gland disorders. Conversely, some medical conditions or treatments can lead to a reduction in terminal hair growth.
