Teosammut, also known as *Teosinte* in its wild form, is a grass species native to Mesoamerica, particularly Mexico and parts of Central America. It is closely related to modern maize (*Zea mays*), with which it shares a common ancestor. Teosinte is classified under the genus *Zea* and is considered a wild progenitor of corn, playing a crucial role in the domestication of maize.

The plant grows as an annual grass, typically reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters. Its seeds are encased in hard, spiky husks, unlike the soft, easily accessible kernels of domesticated corn. Teosinte produces small, dense inflorescences, with both male and female parts on separate branches, a trait that distinguishes it from maize. Archaeological evidence suggests that teosinte was domesticated around 9,000 years ago in southern Mexico, marking the beginning of maize cultivation.
