Teologer, or theologians, are scholars who study the nature of the divine and the beliefs, practices, and institutions of religious traditions. They interpret sacred texts, formulate doctrinal statements, and examine how belief shapes ethics, politics, and daily life. The term is used across languages, including Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English, and can refer to both academic scholars and religious leaders.

The field encompasses several subdisciplines. Systematic theology seeks coherent articulation of doctrine; biblical or scriptural studies analyze sacred writings; historical theology traces how doctrines develop over time; philosophical theology applies philosophical methods to questions about God and reality; and practical or pastoral theology considers how theological insights guide ministry, worship, and pastoral care.

Methodologically, teologer work with philology, hermeneutics, and historical-critical analysis, as well as philosophical argumentation and comparative religion. They may engage communities, teach in universities or seminaries, and participate in interfaith dialogue or public discourse. The scope often includes ethics, social justice, and the interaction of belief with science and culture.

Historically, theologians have been central to shaping religious traditions and institutions. In Christianity, figures such as Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Karl Barth influenced doctrine and practice; in Judaism and Islam, scholars have contributed to legal, philosophical, and mystical streams; in other traditions, theologians interpret and reformulate teachings in light of new contexts. Contemporary debates address pluralism, secularization, gender, and technology.
