Teleskooppityyppi, often translated as "telescope type," refers to a classification system for astronomical telescopes based on their optical design. The primary categories are refractors and reflectors.

Refracting telescopes use lenses to gather and focus light. A refractor consists of an objective lens at the front, which collects light from distant objects, and an eyepiece at the other end, through which the observer looks. The objective lens refracts, or bends, the incoming light to form an image. While early refractors were powerful, they suffer from chromatic aberration, a phenomenon where different colors of light are focused at slightly different points, leading to color fringing. Modern refractors often employ compound lenses, such as achromatic or apochromatic designs, to minimize this aberration.

Reflecting telescopes, also known as reflectors, use mirrors to gather and focus light. The main optical component is a primary mirror, typically parabolic, which reflects incoming light to a secondary mirror. The secondary mirror then directs the focused light to an eyepiece or an imaging sensor. Reflectors are generally less susceptible to chromatic aberration than refractors and can be built with much larger apertures, making them more suitable for observing faint objects. Common reflector designs include the Newtonian, Cassegrain, and Schmidt-Cassegrain. The choice of telescope type depends on factors such as the intended astronomical observations, budget, and portability requirements.
