Teleoperation refers to the control of a machine or robot from a distance. This is typically achieved through a communication link that allows an operator to receive sensory feedback from the remote environment and send control commands to the machine. The term is a portmanteau of "tele-", meaning distant, and "operation," meaning to work or control.

In teleoperation, the operator is often in a different physical location from the teleoperated system. This distance can range from a few meters to thousands of kilometers, or even to outer space. The operator's interface usually includes visual displays showing what the remote system's cameras see, and controls such as joysticks, buttons, or even haptic devices that provide tactile feedback.

Applications of teleoperation are diverse and span many fields. In space exploration, it allows astronauts and ground control to operate robotic probes and rovers on other planets. In surgery, telesurgery enables surgeons to perform complex procedures on patients in remote locations, overcoming geographical barriers. It is also used in hazardous environments, such as nuclear power plants or disaster sites, where human presence is too dangerous. Underwater exploration and deep-sea maintenance also rely heavily on teleoperated vehicles. The effectiveness of teleoperation often depends on the latency of the communication link; high latency can make precise control difficult.
