Tekstiilivärit, or textile dyes, are substances used to impart color to fabrics and other textile materials. They are essential for the textile industry, allowing for the vast array of colors seen in clothing, home furnishings, and other textile products. The application of dyes can be a complex process, involving specific chemicals and techniques to ensure the color penetrates the fibers and remains permanent through washing and wear.

There are two primary categories of textile dyes: natural dyes and synthetic dyes. Natural dyes are derived from plant, animal, or mineral sources, such as indigo from plants or cochineal from insects. Historically, these were the only dyes available. Synthetic dyes, developed from the mid-19th century onwards, are chemically manufactured and offer a wider spectrum of colors, greater consistency, and often better colorfastness.

Common types of synthetic textile dyes include reactive dyes, which form a chemical bond with the fiber, making them very wash-fast; disperse dyes, used for synthetic fibers like polyester; and vat dyes, known for their exceptional durability. The choice of dye depends on the type of fiber being colored (e.g., cotton, wool, silk, synthetics), the desired colorfastness, and the application method. Dyeing processes can involve various methods like exhaustion dyeing, continuous dyeing, and printing, each tailored to achieve specific results.
