Tekstiilijätteet, or textile waste, refers to discarded clothing, fabrics, and other textile-based materials that are no longer wanted or usable by their owners. This waste stream includes a wide variety of items, from worn-out garments and damaged upholstery to scraps from manufacturing processes and leftover promotional materials. The sheer volume of textile production and consumption globally has led to a significant increase in textile waste.

Managing textile waste involves several approaches. One of the primary methods is recycling, where textiles are broken down and reprocessed into new materials. This can include mechanical recycling, which grinds textiles into fibers for use in insulation or new fabrics, and chemical recycling, which uses chemical processes to break down fibers to their original components for remanufacturing. Another important aspect is reuse, where textiles that are still in good condition are donated or sold for second-hand use. This extends the lifespan of garments and reduces the need for new production.

Proper disposal is also crucial. Landfilling is a common but problematic method, as textiles can take a very long time to decompose and can release harmful substances into the environment. Incineration can be used to generate energy, but it also has environmental considerations. Efforts are increasingly focused on diverting textile waste from landfills through improved collection systems, public awareness campaigns, and technological advancements in recycling. The aim is to move towards a more circular economy for textiles, minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.
