Tekijänoikeusmerkintöjen, often referred to as copyright notices, are statements used to inform the public about the ownership of intellectual property. The primary purpose of a copyright notice is to make it clear that the work is protected by copyright and to identify who holds those rights. While not strictly required in many jurisdictions for copyright to exist (as copyright is often granted automatically upon creation of an original work), a notice serves as a strong deterrent against infringement and can be helpful in legal disputes by establishing the date of publication and the owner.

In some older legal frameworks, failing to include a copyright notice could result in the work entering the public domain. However, modern copyright laws, such as those influenced by international treaties, generally do not have this strict requirement. Despite this, continuing to use copyright notices is considered good practice for clearly communicating copyright status and protecting the rights of creators and owners. The notice can also include additional terms or restrictions on how the work may be used, though these are often elaborated upon in separate licensing agreements.
