Tegenideal is a term used in Dutch philosophy and political theory to denote an ideal that stands in opposition to or challenges another central ideal within a normative framework. The word is composed of tegen (against) and ideaal (ideal). The concept is analogous to similar notions in other languages, such as the German Gegenideal, and is used to analyze value conflicts without assuming a fixed hierarchy of goals.

In practice, tegenidealen function as a heuristic to illuminate tensions between competing values. For example, debates about social justice often pit equality against liberty, or inclusion against efficiency. A tegenideaal would identify the rival values that constrain or modify the primary ideal, making explicit what is sacrificed or constrained by pursuing that ideal alone.
