Contemporary theatre theory continues to engage with issues of identity, politics, technology, and globalization. It draws on disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, and cultural studies. Key areas of inquiry include the actor-audience relationship, the semiotics of performance, the dramaturgy of plays, the historical evolution of theatrical forms, and the social and political implications of theatre. Theatre theory is not a single, unified doctrine but rather a dynamic and evolving conversation about the art of performance.
