Teadusharusid (Estonian for branches of science) are the major divisions of scientific knowledge, organized to reflect the diversity of inquiry and methods used to understand the natural world, society, and formal systems.

Broadly, scholars distinguish natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, astronomy), formal sciences (mathematics, logic, statistics, computer science), and social sciences (psychology, sociology, economics, political science, anthropology, geography). Applied sciences include engineering, medicine, and agriculture. These categories help structure research, education, and policy, while many fields combine elements from several branches.

Historically, disciplines emerged from philosophy and practical crafts; the modern system of discipline-based research developed with increased specialization and university departments in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since then, boundaries have shifted as new methods, technologies, and data sources emerged, prompting reconfigurations and new subfields.

In contemporary research, many problems require crossing boundaries, giving rise to interdisciplinary fields such as cognitive science, environmental science, data science, and bioinformatics. The rise of data-driven approaches, forecasting, and complex systems analysis further blurs traditional lines between teadusharusid.

Classification is not fixed; different countries and institutions use distinct schemes. Debates continue about the status of “hard” versus “soft” sciences and about recognizing new domains that blend elements from multiple branches. As a concept, teadusharusid serves to structure education, research funding, and bibliometric analysis, while remaining adaptable to evolving knowledge and emerging areas.
