Tavast, also known as Tavastia in English and Tavastland in Swedish, is a historical region in southern Finland. The name is used in historical and linguistic contexts to refer to the territory and its inhabitants during the Middle Ages, when the people living there were commonly called Tavastians. The exact origin of the name is uncertain, but it has long been linked with the central Finnish area later associated with Häme (Finnish) or Tavastland (Swedish).

Geographically, Tavast lay in southern Finland and formed a core area around what is now the Häme region. In the medieval period it was one of the central Finnish territories that came under Swedish influence as Finland was gradually Christianized and integrated into the Swedish realm. Tavastia functioned as an administrative province within Sweden until 1809, when Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy under Russia. In modern terms, the historical concept of Tavastia is mostly used as a cultural and geographical reference, with the contemporary region of Kanta-Häme and adjacent areas encompassing much of what was once Tavastia.

Historically, the Tavastians were primarily involved in agriculture and local trade, and their region was a corridor for routes linking eastern and western Finland with coastal centers. The legacy of Tavast persists in Finnish place names, cultural references, and regional identities that emphasize the historic Tavastia core of southern Finland. Today, Tavast is mainly of historical and cultural interest, rather than an active administrative designation.
