Taululaskuun (literally "table calculation" in Finnish) refers to a traditional arithmetic method that uses a tabular arrangement to perform calculations. In this approach numbers are organized into columns corresponding to units, tens, hundreds, and so on, and operations are carried out column by column, often with carrying and borrowing tracked within the table.

Origins and usage: The method appears in Finnish mathematics education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a means to support understanding of place value and basic operations. It has persisted in some teaching resources and is discussed as part of the history of instruction, though modern curricula more frequently emphasize mental math and digital tools.

Method and example: For the addition 174 + 389, align the numbers in a table with columns for hundreds, tens, and ones. Ones column: 4 + 9 = 13; write 3 and carry 1. Tens column: 7 + 8 + 1 = 16; write 6 and carry 1. Hundreds column: 1 + 3 + 1 = 5. The result is 563.

Variants and evaluation: The tabular method supports visual learners and helps illustrate place value and carrying. It can be more time-consuming than mental arithmetic or calculator use, and may be less practical for large-scale calculations, yet it remains a pedagogical tool in some classrooms and textbooks.
