Tasa-arvo, sometimes written tasaarvo, is the Finnish principle of gender equality. It holds that women and men should have equal rights, opportunities and treatment in all areas of life, including politics, work, education and family life. The concept is central to Finnish law and public policy and guides legislation, government programs and private-sector practices.

The legal framework includes the Act on Equality between Women and Men, which prohibits gender-based discrimination and requires authorities and many employers to take active steps to promote equality. It complements the Non-Discrimination Act and other human-rights laws. In many workplaces, employers with a certain size are required to prepare an equality plan and to monitor progress toward equal pay and representation. The Equality Ombudsman enforces these rules and provides guidance, support and remedies to individuals who experience discrimination.

Historically, Finland has pursued gender equality through reforms linked to the welfare state, education and social services. The country is frequently cited among leaders in global gender-equality rankings and uses policies such as parental leave, affordable childcare and educational reforms to support work–life balance and reduce gender disparities.

Today, tasaarvo remains a continuing objective with ongoing debates about pay gaps, leadership representation and practical implementation. Policy efforts focus on enforcement, transparency and inclusive practices in both public institutions and private enterprises.
