tartózkodott

Tartózkodott is the simple past tense form of the Hungarian reflexive verb tartózkodni, which means "to reside, to dwell, to stay, or to abstain from." The verb is typically used with an object – the place or thing from which one remains––and a personal pronoun. For example, "Mi tavaly Budapestban tartózkodott" translates to "She resided in Budapest last year." As a past tense, tartózkodott denotes an action completed in the past and is frequently found in historical narratives, demographic reports, or personal diaries.

Grammatically, tartózkodott ends in –d for the third person singular (he, she, it) and is employed in both affirmative and negative contexts: "Nem tartózkodott otthon" ("He did not stay at home"). Hungarian often follows a subject–verb–object word order, but flexibility allows the verb to appear at the end of subordinate clauses, as in "Amíg tartózkodott a faluban, addig sokat dolgozott" ("While he resided in the village, he worked a lot").

In literature and media, tartózkodott is also used figuratively to express abstention from a particular activity: "Tartózkodott a dohányzástól" means "He abstained from smoking." The term therefore appears in discussions of lifestyle choices, health campaigns, and moral essays.
