Tarmobstruktion, also known as intestinal obstruction, is a condition where the normal flow of intestinal contents is blocked. This blockage can occur in either the small intestine or the large intestine. The obstruction can be complete, meaning no contents can pass, or partial, allowing some material to move through.

Several factors can lead to a tarmobstruktion. In the small intestine, adhesions from previous abdominal surgery are a common cause. Hernias, where a part of the intestine bulges through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, can also cause obstruction. Other causes include inflammatory bowel disease, tumors, and the twisting of the intestine upon itself (volvulus). In the large intestine, tumors, diverticulitis, and fecal impaction are frequent culprits.

Symptoms of tarmobstruktion typically include abdominal pain, which can be cramping and intermittent or constant and severe depending on the location and severity of the blockage. Vomiting is also common, and the vomit may eventually contain fecal matter if the obstruction is in the lower part of the intestine. Abdominal distension, bloating, and an inability to pass gas or stool are other key signs.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the obstruction. Initial management often involves bowel rest, nasogastric tube insertion to decompress the bowel, and intravenous fluids. Surgery may be required to remove the blockage, correct any underlying cause like a tumor or adhesion, or resect damaged bowel. Tarmobstruktion is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention.
