Tangled dislokasjon refers to a complex topological defect in crystalline materials. Dislocations are line defects where the regular atomic arrangement is disrupted. In a simple, non-tangled dislocation, the line defect is typically straight or forms a simple curve. However, in a tangled dislocation network, multiple dislocation lines intersect and intertwine with each other.

This entanglement arises during plastic deformation, where the movement and multiplication of dislocations lead to interactions. These interactions can cause dislocations to cross-slip (move to a different slip plane) or form jogs (kinks in the dislocation line). When many such interactions occur, the dislocation lines become entangled, forming a three-dimensional network.

The presence of tangled dislocations significantly affects the mechanical properties of a material. It impedes the motion of other dislocations, leading to strain hardening, where the material becomes stronger and harder as it is deformed. The density and arrangement of the tangled network are crucial factors determining the material's overall strength and ductility.
