Talajvízrétegek, often translated as groundwater layers or aquifers, refer to underground geological formations capable of yielding significant quantities of water. These layers are typically composed of porous and permeable materials such as sand, gravel, sandstone, or fractured rock. The water held within these formations is called groundwater and is a crucial source for drinking water, irrigation, and industrial processes.

Groundwater exists in different zones underground. The unsaturated zone, also known as the vadose zone, is the upper layer where pores contain both air and water. Below this lies the saturated zone, where all pore spaces are filled with water. The upper surface of this saturated zone is called the water table. In some cases, a confining layer, such as clay or impermeable rock, can trap a layer of groundwater between two impermeable strata. This creates a confined aquifer, where the groundwater is under pressure.

Recharge, the replenishment of groundwater, typically occurs through precipitation infiltrating the ground or from surface water bodies like rivers and lakes.
