A taxon, plural taxa, is a unit of biological classification. It denotes a group of one or more populations that have been given a formal name and are placed within a hierarchical system. Taxa can encompass individuals sharing a set of defining characteristics or those connected by evolutionary lineage. The concept is used to organize biodiversity into nested levels, from broad groups to more specific ones, and to reflect relationships among organisms.

Taxa occur at different ranks, with the most familiar being species, genus, and family. A species is the basic unit, representing a group of interbreeding or potentially interbreeding individuals. A genus groups one or more species that are closely related, while a family aggregates several genera. Higher ranks such as order, class, phylum (division in botany), and kingdom encompass increasingly larger and more diverse groups. Taxonomic practice also recognizes subsidiary levels like subfamilies or subspecies to capture finer distinctions.

Names and definitions of taxa are governed by codes of nomenclature to ensure consistency and stability. In zoology, the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature applies, while in botany, algae, and fungi the appropriate code is the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. Each species has a type specimen that anchors its name, and higher taxa are linked to type genera or other reference concepts. Taxonomy, or systematics, is an evolving discipline as new data from morphology, genetics, and phylogenetics prompts revisions and refinements of the classification.
