Takfläktar, or ceiling fans, are mechanical fans mounted on the ceiling of a room. Their primary purpose is to circulate air within the space, creating a cooling sensation by increasing evaporation from the skin. This air movement can make a room feel several degrees cooler without actually lowering the ambient temperature.

Most ceiling fans consist of a motor attached to a downrod, from which one or more blades extend. These blades are designed with a specific pitch and shape to efficiently move air downwards or upwards depending on the fan's direction. Many modern ceiling fans also include integrated lighting fixtures, combining illumination and air circulation into a single unit.

The direction of rotation of a ceiling fan can be reversed. In warmer months, the fan is typically set to rotate counter-clockwise, pushing air downwards to create a cooling breeze. In colder months, reversing the fan to rotate clockwise pulls cooler air up towards the ceiling and gently pushes warmer air that has risen near the ceiling back down into the living space. This can help to distribute heat more evenly and reduce reliance on heating systems.

Ceiling fans are a common feature in homes and commercial spaces, particularly in regions with warm climates. They offer an energy-efficient alternative or supplement to air conditioning, as they consume significantly less electricity to achieve a similar perceived cooling effect. Installation typically involves mounting the fan to a suitable ceiling electrical box. Maintenance usually involves occasional dusting of the blades and checking for any loose parts.
