tagurdkäik

Tagurdkäik is the gear used to move a motor vehicle backward. In Estonian driving terminology, tagurdkäik (literally “reverse gear”) refers to the gear position that enables backward motion. The term is related to tagurdus, the act of reversing.

In vehicles with a manual transmission, tagurdkäik is selected by moving the gear lever to the reverse position. The arrangement varies by model: some cars place reverse opposite first gear, others require lifting a collar, pressing a button, or moving the lever through a gate to prevent accidental engagement. Engaging tagurdkäik typically requires fully depressing the clutch.

In automatic transmissions, reverse is engaged by selecting the R position on the gear selector. When activated, the vehicle remains in reverse until a different gear is chosen. Some automatics implement a parking gear lock or safety interlock to prevent unintended engagement.

Driving in tagurdkäik usually involves low speeds and short distances. Drivers are advised to use mirrors and rear cameras when available, perform a final look over the shoulder, and modulate throttle smoothly while releasing the clutch or applying power. Caution is warranted due to reduced forward visibility and the presence of pedestrians or obstacles behind the vehicle. In commercial vehicles, backup alarms and sensors are commonly used to enhance safety.
