Several factors influence register. The purpose of the communication, the relationship between participants, and the topic all shape which language variety is appropriate. Channel and medium (written, spoken, formal, informal, digital) also matter. Formal registers often use sophisticated vocabulary, complete sentences, passive constructions, and honorifics or polite pronouns, while informal registers favor simpler syntax, slang, and contractions. Technical and professional registers (legal, medical, scientific, journalistic) employ domain-specific terminology and standardized conventions. There can also be ceremonial or literary registers that aim for rhetorical effect or traditional style.

Registers are fluid and can shift within a single interaction. Speakers may move from formal to informal language as relationships evolve or as the setting changes, a process known as register-shifting or style-shifting.
